Monica Gray- TurboBFF
Can you feel the energy of our 4th Annual TurboKick party? More than 200 people gathered from throughout the Midwest (one fan drove from North Carolina!) Not even an unfortunate tubing "incident" on Hubbard Lake could stop this party. Chalene flew off the tube and ended up in the ER the night before. But a true champ, she came to cheer us on, sign autographs and hand out awards. Her BFF Monica Gray filled her spunky shoes (see that jump?) with an action-packed workout. What a way to celebrate fitness? Who says that summer is slow in health clubs? You've' got to CREATE an experience for people! Our members are the best. Love their spirit. Until next year, my Calfornia friends! We can't wait!

MY AMAZING MENTORS Chalene (left) and Jenelle (right)

Chalene Johnson, Trina Gray, Jenelle SummersThese women sure know how to GIVE BACK.  Chalene and Jenelle shared stories (and laughter) from their careers with local fitness enthusiasts and business owners at a local eatery. Chalene described her 15-year journey as a business owner struggling to keep everything afloat to becoming a successful entrepreur and now a multimillionaire fitness personality. Her advice? Help others. Be real.

Jenelle shared her 2-year journey as a Beachbody coach and now 6-figure earner doing what she loves and spending more time with family. Her advice? Focus on helping others become financially and physically fit. Don't sell, just walk the walk.

So true in anything in life, right?
Help others, be authentic and walk your walk!

Training Tips

By Head Trainer Casey Stutzman

Casey StutzmanThere are a lot of active people who still have a hard time meeting their health and fitness goals.  People who walk their dog, take long bike rides, garden, golf, work around the house, etc. are doing a great job at staying active, but there is a big difference between activity and exercise.

In order to make changes in body composition or weight loss you need to push the body past its limits.  This may soundheart rate up challenging and intimidating but it really boils down to getting your heart rate up to 60-80% (or your max HR) and keeping it there for a sustained period of time.  The body can also be challenged during resistance training with simple things like increasing the weight, doing more reps or using less rest time.

Lower intensity activities are great for keeping the body agile, but they do not offer the potential for change like true exercise does.

This time of year I see a lot of people fall victim to this trap because the weather is nice and they are doing more activities.  Fitness is not seasonal.  It is year round.  I'm not saying ditch the fun, seasonal activities, I'm just saying to make sure you schedule time to challenge your body with true exercise.

Healthy Living

 -suggestions for an inspired life-
By Assistant Manager Kelly Bowlin

Have you heard of Satay?  It is in an Kelly BowlinIndonesian-style kebob served with a spicy peanut sauce.  In the following recipe I've amped up the sauce's flavor with some sweet peach nectar.  Throw the vegetables and "dessert" on the grill alongside the seafood entree and what could be simpler?  This all-in-one meal boasts 10 grams of fiber, plus a multiday supply of vitamins A, C and K.  Bok choy is also a terrific source of calcium.
Ingredients:
--6 TBSP smooth, natural peanut butter, stirred to combine
--3 TBSP (packed) brown sugar
--3 TBSP seasoned rice vinegar
--2 TBSP soy sauce
Looza--2 to 3 TSP of hot chili paste (such as sambal oelek)*
--9 TBSP peach nectar, divided**
--3 peaches or nectarines, each cut into 6 wedges
--16 uncooked large shrimp, peeled, de-veined
--6 heads of baby bok choy, halved lengthwise

Directions:
Prepare barbecue by setting to medium to high high.  Whisk first 5 ingredients and 5 TBSPs nectar until smooth; season sauce with Sataypepper.  Arrange peaches, shrimp and bok choy on grill.  Brush with 4 TBSPs nectar; brush lightly with 1/4 cup sauce.  Sprinkle with salt and pepper.  Grill until peaches are slightly charred, shrimp are just opaque in center and bok choy halves are just tender, about 2 minutes per side for peaches and 3 minutes per side for shrimp and bok choy.  Mound shrimp, bok choy and peaches on platter.  Drizzle with some sauce.  Serve with remaining sauce.

-get inspired in a group setting-
 By Assistant Manager Tracie Werblow

Tracie WerblowNothing gets you through a tough set or challenging cardio session better than motivational music playing in the group exercise studio.  The music takes you to the top of that hill in cycle, through a sweaty interval, makes you swing your hips while you cha cha and more!  It can even extend your workout --which means more calories burned.

Music notesResearch shows that music can improve your strength and endurance as well as improve motor skills and promote relaxation.

BAC instructors take pride in putting a playlist together that will pump you up.  To better serve you TELL US what songs motivate you and make your experience even better.  Email Tracie@BayAthleticClub.com to tell her what you want to hear during the next cycle or sculpt class.  Then keep your ears open and cheer extra loud when your jam comes on!

 "GET INSPIRED!"

Over 100 people in OUR community have been featured in the Bay Athletic Club "60 Second Inspiration" spots because they have transformed their life through fitness!  That is truly amazing, but even better, even more people have been inspired to do something healthy because of them.  Just like Bob Krafft, who was inspired by the story on Alpena County employees who did a Corporate Fit Challenge.  Bob brought the idea to his service group, got them going on a CFC and lost 20.2 pounds himself in the process.  And know he and his wife Sue are featured in their own "60 Second Inspiration" story.  The positive cycle keeps going.
