Trina GrayWe aren't trying to change you, we're trying to love you.

At a small diner this morning with my kids, I enjoyed a veggie omelette and a game of "20 Questions." Just as we were leaving, two couples sat at the table next to us. They laughed and swapped stories of their New Year's Eve party the night before. As they thumbed through the menus, one of the wives suggested that, after the night they had, they should choose something healthy. Here is how that went:

-Husband: Oh, she's always trying to change me. I must not be good enough the way I am. She's nagging me to be healthier.
-Husband's friend: Yeah, well, I guess you can try to be "moderately healthy," right? I mean, not go crazy about it, maybe cut out some fries.
-Wife: It's too late for "moderately healthy" for us, we're too far gone.
Silence.

These same conversations take place at tables everywhere. Here is the real message -- if your loved one makes a suggestion - more vegetables, less alcohol, more exercise, less computer time, more sleep, less television -- I can promise you, they aren't trying to change you. They are trying to love you.

The question is, are you ready to love yourself enough to change? To change your habits and your health? And I don't mean "moderately healthy" (that leaves a whole lot of room for excuses). I mean healthy. Just plain healthy. Why not? Carrying around pounds of excess fat, taking multiple medications, being out of breath, out of shape, out of energy is just...OUT! Do you have to run a marathon? No.  You have to run your own health before it runs you.

So, it's a new year. A new opportunity to live fit and free. Someone in your life needs this message. Will you share it?

My tips for living a fit life are simple.
Try a new workout. Then try another. Find activities that invigorate you. Get new music. Bust a move. Team up with a friend. Go to a class. Meet other fit people. Subscribe to fitness blogs or magazines. Swap healthy recipes. Schedule your workouts in your planner.  Don't cancel. Set a new health goal every month. Reward yourself with something other than dessert. Surround yourself with positive messages. Turn off the television. Put down your smartphone. Make a grocery shopping list. Pack your lunch. Show your child that fitness is important. Don't make excuses. Make action. Decide to be the most fit you've been, no matter what your age. Journal. Breath deeper. Love yourself. Care about your health. Believe in your power to change. Stop waiting for life to slow down (it won't).

Sincerely,
Trina

MEMBER'S VOICES
By Amy Schultz, Membership Director

Amy SchultzEXCITING CHANGES AT BAC!

My goal as your membership director is to keep you happy and inspired in fitness. It's that simple!

So, of course I'm fired up to announce the BIG BAC project that is underway in January!
Drum roll please...
The Women's Circuit Room makeover!

You have commented, we have listened and now we're taking action. During 2011, the majority of suggestions in the comment box referenced the women's room.

When we opened BAC, this was the only room that
had used equipment. It's worked for us,
and we've freshened it up over the years, but have always wanted to update it.
The time has come!

Yes, the women's room will remain a comfortable, non-intimidating, sunny, welcoming space, but we want to liven up the space and your workouts. We have studied the usage of the room, and have created a great plan for you.

We've invested in a couple of new strength and cardio machines to keep you burning calories and toning muscles.  They are due to arrive within the month! But we'll also be adding some fresh paint and storage pieces to spice it up and keep it clutter free.

To top it all off, we are going to offer fitness clinics in February so you can learn how to get the most out of the reorganized room.

We value your opinions and love hearing your suggestions.  But we really love taking action on them!  We're looking forward to the finished project and hope you are too.

Here we are again. A fresh start. For many, January is an exciting time, full of hope and promise. I hope it is for you!

At BAC, we have always encouraged and inspired our members to see fitness as a year round affair, not a fad.

Our club is busy in the winter, spring, summer and fall and we're proud of it! We have classes, camps and challenges every month to keep you focused and engaged.
In fact, maybe you saw Trina's article in The Alpena News this weekend talking about this!

So, I am here to just gently remind you to avoid a pattern that others may fall into, what I like to call the "Northern Michigan Cyle."
  • January-excited about fitness and motivated to get results. Hitting it hard.
  • April-goals begin to slip as the snow melts away and Spring Break is behind us. Begin to fall off routine.
  • July - camping means s'mores and sitting. Being outside "feels" like being active.
  • September- back to school means motivated to get back on track. Routine picks up again.
  • November-deer season, followed by Thanksgiving then Christmas...need I say more?
YOU will not play into this game. Because YOU know that fitness is a priority no matter what the weather, the holiday or the season.
Put fitness in your top five priorities. Once it's there, "life" can't get in the way of your success.

Fitness Inspired Gala

Fitness Inspired Gala

Yes, you are invited.

Please join us as we celebrate the power of fitness in our community. Our 4th Annual Fitness Inspired Gala will be held on Saturday, January 21st at 6 p.m. at the Art in the Loft. Tickets are available now and cost just $25.00.

The Gala is based on our "60 Second Inspirations" that are featured weekly on WBKB-TV and posted on our website.

Of course all of the honorees are invited, but YOU are, too! You don't need to know a soul! We will be there to welcome you and greet you with a smile. Bring someone who needs to be inspired.

We guarantee it will be a night to remember!

In 2011, more than 30 people shared their fitness journey to inspire others. One lucky person will be awarded $1,000 in cash and prizes as the most inspiring story of the year. You must be there to see it!

Stop by the BAC front desk or call 989.356.5600 to reserve your seat!

And the stories keep coming in 2012!  This month we'll feature Beverly Kannowski, a busy mother who made time for herself and inspired her family in the process; Kelly Blade, who regrets not getting involved in fitness sooner and Meaghan Daleski, a woman who says fitness saved her life.

Class Spotlight
-bac group exercise rocks!-
 by Tracie Werblow, Asst. Manager

Tracie WerblowHave you heard of our Boot Camps or Training Camps and thought, "I could NEVER do that!" I'm here to tell you that you can.

In my four years as the Bay Athletic Club Boot Camp Director, I can truly attest that our camps are for every age, every body type and every fitness level. Someone just like you has lost weight, gotten stronger or changed their habits already.
You can, too.

During last month's 10 Day Fat Blasting Boot Camp, many participants had never worked out before this camp. They were literally starting from scratch. On the other hand, many participants in this same camp were regulars at BAC. Guess what?  They ALL succeeded. They ALL cheered each other on. They ALL got results.

They said:
"I'm no longer scared of exercise"
"I'm glad I did something for me"
"I used to avoid exercise because I always had aches and pains. I realized, I wasn't injured, I was just weak and needed to build strength"
"My pants fit better"
"I'm excited to wake up in the morning"
"I am out of a rut and so proud."
August 2011 Boot Camp
Camps = Fun Fitness!

So don't let self-doubt keep you from taking charge of your life.  Hop in a Boot Camp (at BAC) or Training Camp (at Bay Urban) in the beginning of the year. Do something outside your comfort zone and reap the rewards.

Healthy Living

 -suggestions for an inspired life-
By Kelly Bowlin, Asst. Manager

Kelly Bowlin
It's a little-known fact that herbs (and spices), such as rosemary, have  greater concentrations of antioxidants than any common fruit or vegetable. Herbs also contain a wide variety of antioxidants as well, making them one of the top foods.

Antioxidants are the primary source of many of the health benefits of rosemary. These benefits include stimulating your immune system and brain functions, improved circulation, digestion and protection from cancer-causing toxins.

Rosemary contains caffeic acid and rosmarinic acid, both of which are potent antioxidants as well as anti-inflammatory agents.  Get your healthy dose with these quick and easy weeknight chicken burgers.

Rosemary-Sage Burgers with Apple Slaw and Chive "Mayo"

INGREDIENTS:
Burger
-1lb ground chicken
-1 TBSP chopped fresh rosemary
-1 TBSP chopped fresh sage
-1/4 TSP salt
-4 whole grain buns
-1 cup baby spinach leaves
Chive "mayo"
-1/2 cup nonfat sour cream or greek yogurt
-2 TBSP chopped fresh chives
-2 dashes each salt and pepper
Apple Slaw
-3 green apples, peeled, cored and grated
-2 TSP extra-virgin olive oil
-1 TSP fresh lemon juice
-1/4 TSP salt

DIRECTIONS:
BurgerPreheat a grill or pan to medium high. Combine ground chicken, rosemary, sage and salt in a medium sized bowl; form into four patties.  In a small bowl, combine mayo ingredients.  In a medium sized bowl combine slaw ingredients.  Grill patties four minutes on each side or until juices run clear.  Toast the buns and spread each top with mayo.  Place burger on bun and top with slaw and several spinach leaves.
