A Community with Spirit
The evening before my family and I made the trek to Madison for Spring Break, I witnessed something amazing. The memory of the event kept me smiling the entire 9-hour drive. Not the downpour, nor the endless potty stops, could dampen my spirits.
Here's what I witnessed -- 54 people in Alcona County united to celebrate the end of their most recent BAC Boot Camp. People of all ages, and all walks of life exploded in applause, cried and hugged as their fitness and weight loss results were read. I wish I had captured it on video to share with other communities -- to awaken them, to enliven them! Lives were changed that night. People returned home with greater joy, confidence, and sense of community.
The power of fitness is alive and well in northern Michigan.
Someone tell Oprah.
In health and happiness,
Trina

Superfoods
If you've never heard the term "superfood" listen up! Superfood refers to a list of items, available at your local grocery store, that are high in phytonutrients and are believed to have health benefits. The recipe below uses two popular superfoods: sweet potatoes & black beans. Enjoy!
Sweet Potato & Black Bean Chili
Ingredients:
2 tsp extra virgin olive oil
1 small onion, finely diced
1 small sweet potato, peeled and diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tbsp chili powder
2 tsp ground cumin
1/4 tsp ground chipotle chile*
1/8 tsp salt, or to taste
1 1/3 cups of water
1 15oz can black beans, rinsed
1 cup canned diced tomatoes
2 tsp lime juice
2 tbsp chopped fresh cilantro
*Chipotle peppers are dried, smoked jalapeno peppers. Ground chipotle can be found in the specialty spice section of most supermarkets.
Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onion and potato and cook, stirring often, until the onion is slightly softened, about 4 minutes. Add garlic, chili powder, cumin, chipotle and salt and cook, stirring constantly, until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add water, bring to a simmer, cover, reduce heat to maintain a gentle simmer and cook until the potato is tender, 10 to 12 minutes. Add beans, tomatoes and lime juice; increase heat to high and return to a simmer, stirring often. Reduce heat to maintain a simmer and cook until slightly reduced, about 4 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in cilantro.
Make ahead tip: Add all the ingredients except the cilantro; cover and refrigerate for 2 days. Reheat, stir in the cilantro and add more lime if desired.

Training Tips
-advice from certified personal trainers-
Chest Press using the TRX
by Casey Stutzman, BAC Head Trainer
Want a new spin on the basic chest press? Give the TRX a try. Start facing away from the anchor with your hands in the handles. Your arms should be straight out from your shoulders and slightly outside (similar to a pushup position). Make sure the straps are not resting or rubbing on your shoulders. Lower your body slowly by bending at the elbows and moving your shoulders. When you reach the bottom, push back up and repeat. Keep your body straight throughout the movement. For an added challenge, try lifting one leg to the rear or side, then switch legs.
Want to learn more about the TRX? Casey will give a TRX demo at BAC on Saturday, April 18th at 11 a.m. It's free and open to all members. Spice up your routine!

BAC Updates
Au Revoir Sue! Sue Kuchnicki has been a driving force at Bay Athletic Club since it opened 3 years ago. She has touched hundreds of lives through personal training, group exercise classes and Boot Camps. Her love of fitness and determination to meet her goals has been a constant inspiration. The Thursday night cycle class will miss her "Sargeant Sue" style!
Sue, a registered nurse, is starting a new adventure this month by moving to Metro Detroit, where she will work in the Emergency Room of the Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital. She is going to continue sharing her love of fitness in a new club. Those "big city folks" have no idea what they're in for!
Don't worry. Sue isn't gone forever. She plans on teaching at least one class a month at BAC and has plans to return to the north country for the Great Lakes Relay in July.
Thank you Sue for all the wonderful things you have done! You are always a part of TEAM BAC! |
