Inspire the World! But How?
I belong to IDEA Health and Fitness Association whose motto is to "Inspire the World to Fitness." Sounds great, but how? What a daunting task! My friend and mentor Chalene Johnson once joked: "Sure, I'll inspire the world to fitness right in between volunteering at my kids school, getting groceries and teaching class." But what did Chalene do when she poured her passion into TurboJam? She literally inspired millions with her top-selling workouts.
She imagined big. Lesson learned.
In Alpena, Michigan, we decided to inspire outside our city limits. We recently launched our Corporate Fit Challenge as a national effort to shape up workplaces with a six-week fitness and nutrition overhaul. Trainers across the country can implement this turn-key program in less than 30-days and start changing the face of business. With healthcare costs soaring, fitness professionals can (and should!) be a part of the solution!
A sincere thank you to the forward thinking businesses in northern Michigan who blazed the trail. Thank you to the Todd Durkin MasterMind for inspring me...AND THEN SOME. Shout out to BAC members and staff who energize workplaces!
You, too, can Inspire the World to Fitness! How? Be active. Be a change agent in your office, in your home. Get moving. Soon, we'll create so much forward momentum that our health will be unstoppable.
Imagine big.

Healthy Living
-suggestions for an inspired life-
By Kelly Bowlin, Asst. Manager
Summer is the perfect time to try some out of the ordinary, leafy vegetables like; bok choy, kale, chard, fennel, mustard greens and beet greens. Dark green, leafy vegetables are, calorie for calorie, perhaps the most concentrated source of nutrition in any food. They are rich in minerals and vitamins, and provide a variety of phytonutrients including beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin, which protect our cells from damage and our eyes from age-related problems. Check out a nearby farmer's market or grocery store for these healthy veggies.
A great way to use leafy vegetables is with pasta. A meal can be simple and quick, but still delicious and nutritious. Enjoy!
Ingredients:
-1 bunch cooking leafy greens(your choice)
-1 tbsp salt, more to taste
-1lb spaghetti or linguini
-2 anchovie filets (optional)
-4 cloves of garlic
-2 tbsp olive oil
-1/4 to 1/2 tsp of red pepper flakes
-3/4 cup of freshly shredded grating cheese such as parmesan, asiago or aged percornio
Preparation:
Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Meanwhile, trim and wash greens, leaving the leafs whole. Add 1 tbsp salt to boiling water. Add greens and blanch until wilted, from 30 seconds for chard to 2 minutes for kale, use tongs or a slotted spoon to remove the leaves to a colander and rinse them under cool water. Boil pasta until tender to bite. Drain, reserve 1/2 cup of the cooking liquid, and set aside. Meanwhile, chop anchovies, garlic and cooked greens. Once pasta is drained, return pot to medium high heat. Add oil, garlic, pepper flakes and anchovies. Cook, stirring, until garlic turns just a bit golden. Add chopped greens and stir to combine. Add reserved liquid and bring to a boil. Take off heat. Stir in half of the shredded cheese. Taste and add salt if desired. Divide and garnish with remaining cheese. |

Twenty-two athletes tested their physical ability at the first ever BAC Combine.
Freshman through college level athletes participated in the standing broad jump, vertical jump, 40 yard dash, short shuttle, 60 yard shuttle, L drill and bench press to evaluate their overall performance. These drills are the same ones used in the NFL Scouting Combine. The athletes with the overall best rankings are featured in the picture below.

It's all about GRAVITY! I recently spent a weekend in Chicago where I learned the ins and outs of BAC's newest piece of equipment--the Gravity Training System. The Gravity delivers a killer, total body workout in 30 minutes and is perfect for all fitness levels. The Gravity engages the whole body in strength training moves, with the guidance of a personal trainer. I can't wait to share what I've learned and BAC's latest edition with our members.

Community Outreach
Bay Athletic Club is proud to be a sponsor of Girls on the RunŽ, a non-profit organization that focuses on educating and preparing girls for a lifetime of self respect and healthy living. Through the combined efforts of BAC, Alpena Tri-County Area Zonta Club and District Health Department #4, Girls on the Run of the Sunrise Side has been established. The program helps pre-adolescent and adolescent girls develop a strong sense of self and healthy body image, as well as learn how to work with others, stand up for themselves in a healthy way and the importance of giving back to their community. Throughout the program, the girls also train for a 5K.
Cathy Goike of Zonta and Sarah Oskey of BAC attended GOTR training in Charlotte, NC during July and hope to begin the first session soon!
