Corporate Challenges and The Last Yogurt.
On a recent sunny afternoon, 70 people from the community turned out for an energizing Corporate Challenge Reunion workout at Bay Athletic Club. Bus drivers, business owners, nurses, teachers and public officials came together. They sweat. They cheered. They slapped high fives.
The 20-plus workplaces that have participated in the six-week fitness and nutrition overhaul have truly begun to change the fabric of our community. Coworkers are now talking about workouts, water, and what to eat, and less about whiney customers or workplace stress. Hundreds of people have lost weight and inches, but more importantly, they are happier at work and home and have built teams of people to support them.
One of my favorite new Corporate Challenge clients shared this story with me:"My husband and I used to argue over the remote, now we argue over the last yogurt." How telling.
What action are YOU taking right now to inspire change in yourself? Can you visualize yourself with less stress, fewer aches and pains or at a healthier weight? Seek the support of coworkers, family members or friends to join your journey.

Enjoy the issue. Short, sweet and informative, I hope!

p.s. My husband and I coached our daughter's first tball practice tonight. Although they might confuse first and third bases, what a reward to see them having fun. Serves a good reminder that activity makes us happy at all ages! |

Training Tips
-from certified personal trainers-
By Desiree Nowaczyk, CPT
Oftentimes, lower back pain is related to tight hamstrings. To increase their flexibility, perform the following stretch after your body is warmed up.
Lay down on a firm but comfortable surface.Wrap a stretching band (or a towel) around the ball of one foot.
Extend the leg into the air and flex the foot of the leg you are stretching. Be sure to relax the shoulders and neck. The opposite leg remains extended flat on the ground. Take 10 deep breaths and repeat on the other leg. Do this stretch often!

Local Benefits
By Kelly Bowlin, Asst. Manager
Eat seasonally. Eat local. These buzz words are on the lips of "foodies" around America. Why all the fuss? Well, eating locally grown veggies and fruit can help you eat tastier food, decrease the impact on the environment and help the local economy! Every dollar spent on food grown within 100 miles generates twice as much income for the local economy versus a non-local business. As a bonus, by eating with the seasons we are eating foods when they are at their peak taste, the most abundant and least expensive. Currently, asparagus is in season in northern climates, and California and Washington are the only states that produce more asparagus than Michigan. With this in mind, try out my new favorite recipe!
Thai Shrimp Asparagus
Ingredients:
--1 pound shelled and deveined shrimp
--1 tsp curry powder
--2 tbsp vegetable oil, divided
--1 pound asparagus, cut in 2-inch pieces
--2 limes
--1 14oz can light coconut milk
--2 tbsp less sodium fish sauce
--2 pkgs precooked, whole-grain brown rice
Directions:
1. In a medium bowl, toss shrimp with curry paste to coat. In 12 inch skillet, heat oil on medium-high. Add shrimp; cook 3 minutes or just until pink, stirring. Transfer to large bowl.
2. To same skillet, add asparagus and 3 tbsps water; cook 4 minutes or until asparagus is tender-crisp and water evaporates, stirring often. From 1 lime, grate 1 tsp peel; cut remaining lime into 4 wedges.
3. Add asparagus to shrimp bowl. To skillet, add coconut milk and lime peel; heat to boiling on high. Reduce heat to medium and cook 5 minutes or until slightly thickened.
4. Return shrimp mixture to skillet. Stir in fish sauce; heat through. Heat rice in microwave as label directs; serve with shrimp and lime wedges.
