The Power of Community
In a true reflection of community pride, Alpena businesses and residents hosted an annual parade to ring in the holday season. Thousands of families lined the streets, battling the snow and cold, to cheer. I was honored that dozens of BAC employees and members marched (jumping jacked, squat jumped and sprinted!) with enthusiasm, carrying a banner that simply said: "BAC Loves to Inspire."
Have you been inspired to fintess? I hope we've touched your life in a positive way. We have had a busy season of Corporate Fit Challenges (in Alpena and around the globe!), the first-ever BAC Thinner Winner contest (see below) and our all-star line up of classes.
What better way to jump into the holidays than with a celebraton of health. You can pay it forward by inviting a loved one to get active. It often takes someone bold enough to ask: "Are you ready to get healthy? I can support you." You have the power to add years to someone's life, to improve their enjoyment of daily living, but you have to ask.
We planted the seed in thousands of minds Friday night as we carried a banner through the streets of Alpena. Now is the time to ask someone new. Let us know how we can help.
Sincerely,
Trina Gray

Training Tips
By Head Trainer, Casey Stutzman
In life, balance is a key to success. This is true in the fitness world because you need to balance your fitness with your nutrition. Too often people get started with fitness but forget the importance of proper nutrtion. There are two reasons for this.
Reason 1: Many people don't understand how nutrition plays a part in achieving fitness goals. There is a direct correlation between the two. Surprisingly, many people don't eat enough to replenish their bodies resources. Look at it this way, when you exercise you use up vitamins and minerals that helps your body grow stronger.
Reason 2: Many people are overwhelmed with information. No carb, low-fat, fat free, rich in calcium, high in fiber, the list goes on and on, and can turn a simple trip to the grocery store into a nightmare! If you are stuck and need some inspiration, here's an idea! Eat 4 to 5 smaller, balanced meals everyday. Make wise food choices like fresh and natural food. Shop the perimeter of the grocery store and stay away from the processed foods in the middle.
Take some time to experiment with new foods. This is a great road map to get you started!

Healthy Living
-suggestions for an inspired life-
By Kelly Bowlin, Asst. Manager
Fall in Michigan is one of the best times, because as the official apple state, we have an abundance of these little red gems. If you're watching your weight you might not have a lot of apple recipes hanging around (at least ones that don't have white flour, butter and sugar included). Here's an apple recipe to keep around. I got it from a friend recently and love the idea...apple salsa! I've put my own spin on it, so, please give it a try.
Ingredients:
--2 medium apples-cored & cut into 1/4s
--2 TBSP lime juice
--1 jalapeno pepper finely chopped
--1/2cup chopped grapefruit segments
--1/4cup chopped red onion
--1/2cup chopped cooked beets
--1/4 TSP cumin
--1/4 TSP cinnamon
Directions:
Cut up apples and immediately toss with lime juice. Add remaining ingredients, stir and chill for at least 2 hours. Serve with crackers or chips.
*I have used this as a sauce over grilled chicken or fish as well. Just pour it over the meat during the last 10-15 minutes of grilling--it's delicious! This time of year I also throw in some dried cranberries to give it fall color. If there are leftovers, this will keep in the refrigerator for several days. |
