The Bay September 2009 |
| For the Love of... My New Jersey friend Rick Ivone, a talented personal trainer and inspired diabetic, brightened my email in-box with a quote that truly resonates. "Love what you do, or do something else." Loving what I do doesn't mean that life is a picnic. But it does means that the blood, sweat and tears that go into each day are worth it! I love leading a team of passionate professionals in an effort to inspire the community to happier, healthier living. I love being a mom and wife and friend! I don't trudge through the week longing for 5 o'clock on Fridays (well, I do love Friday night TurboKick classes..!) Loving what you do doesn't mean life is all glitz and glamour, it means that you feel rewarded and valued in what you give to others! It means getting through the valleys and seeing peaks ahead. What do you love? What can you give?
I had the opportunity to take the women on my leadership team (from left: Kelly, me, Tracie and Sarah) on an amazing outing to Mackinac Island to enjoy some "blue sky" time to discuss where we are headed in the final quarter of 2009 and beyond! (We missed you Casey! Go Wildcat Football!) We nestled in a table by the harbor for nearly four hours to finalize the launch of our Thinner Winner Contest, Corporate Fit Challenge Reunion and ongoing Challenge Success Track, Small Group Training Program, and our cutting edge business software to help us better serve our members. We talked, laughed, listened and ultimately shared in the common belief that we love what we do. We even found time for quick "BAC-style team photo" as we sprinted to catch the last ferry off the island -- binders, laptops and Starbucks in tow.
Sure, outings are fun, but they are truly just the icing on the cake. I love the daily tasks and the spontaneous adventures equally as they are all a part of one amazing journey. Be amazing on YOUR journey. Yours in fitness, Trina Trina Gray, Owner BAC |

Training Tips
By BAC Head Trainer
Casey Stutzman
No matter what your training goals or fitness level, we all share a common goal--WE WANT RESULTS! Results are best achieved when you mix up your routine, and sometimes that's as simple as working out with a partner or in a small group training session. The results we see from our Boot Camps are proof that working out with others is a successful way to shed inches, lose pounds and tone up. So what's the secret? Participants say the accountability and energy that the group dynamic brings to the workout. It keeps you wanting more and on track! If a Boot Camp isn't your style, grab some friends and family and sign up for BAC's all new small group training sessions for 3 to 5 people.

Healthy Living By Kelly Bowlin, Asst. Manager As summer comes to a close, I am still 100% dedicated to my grill! As long as I don't need winter boots and a hat, that's where you'll find me cooking. I am trying to stay 'carb conscious' lately and have sworn off all things pizza, but I've found a healthy way to get close to pizza-- kabobs! Give these tasty, summery kabobs a try no matter what the weather! Zucchini & Tomato Skewers with Feta Sauce Ingredients: --1/2 cup low-fat feta cheese --1/4 cup low-fat sour cream --2 tbsp water --2 tsp fresh lemon juice --1/2 tsp minced garlic --2 1/2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil --2 tbsp finely chopped fresh basil or herb of choice (tarragon, oregano, etc) --2 medium zucchini (1lb total) --3/4 lb cherry tomatoes (preferably on the vine, cut into 4 bunches) --1/4 tsp salt Directions: Prepare grill for moderate heat. Blend feta, sour cream, water, lemon juice and garlic in blender until smooth, then, with motor running, add 1 1/2 tbsp oil in a slow stream. Add basil and salt and pepper to taste and pulse until just combined. Slice zucchini horizontally (to the size of the tomatoes) and toss in a large bowl with salt, a tbsp of oil and the tomatoes. After coated thoroughly, thread onto skewers, alternating two zucchini with a tomato. Grill vegetables, in batches if necessary, on oiled grill rack, turning over once with tongs, until just tender, 3 to 5 minutes total per batch. Serve with sauce. |

Community Outreach
Boys & Girls Club
Just before the first school bell of the year, BAC got a chance to hang out with the children at the Boys and Girls Club. Assistant Manager Tracie Werblow and Community Relations Coordinator Sarah Oskey took the kids to Mill Island to soak up the summer sun while playing all sorts of games to get them moving. A favorite of the group was Ships & Sailors, a game that's similar to Simon Says, but with a goofier twist and a lot more running and jumping!
P.E Teachers Workshop
The elementary physical education teachers of Alpena Public Schools also learned how to play Ships & Sailors as part of a two hour workshop at BAC focused on inspiring new curriculum and ways to reach the communities youth. Inactive children often turn into inactive adults, leading to health problems. BAC was honored to be able to work with the people who are often the first to expose children to exercise. The teachers learned how to incorporate athletic drills to enhance motor skills and agility, active games that can also be used as icebreakers, creative relay races, fun partner work and kid yoga.

Businesses on the Rise
Rescuing Their Own Health
In a profession that's devoted to helping others stay safe and healthy it was a nice change of pace for Alpena City Fire Fighters to spend some time focusing on their own health with a Corporate Fit Challenge. Together, this group lost 228.2 pounds and 157 inches! A record for a group this size. Bill LaMarre took home all the awards with his astounding results---42 pounds and 21 inches gone! In fact, five participants each lost over 20 pounds.
Even though their Corporate Fit Challenge is over the fire fighters are still going strong. They're working out at the club, riding their bikes to work, maintaining a healthy diet and looking for ways to continue their success. Congrats!
Shout Out!
Keep up the awesome work current Corporate Fit Challenge participants! Currently the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center and Prell's Services are in the Challenge. Next Up? City of Alpena, Alpena Agency, District IV Health Department, ARMC Cancer Center and First Federal.
