It Doesn't Need to be Perfect, Just Better
I found myself saying these words to many people last week...
- To a frustrated, overweight mother of four who has been inactive and controlled by food for years and wants to feel good in her own skin again.
- To a young dad who lacks energy and eats sugar cereal for breakfast because that's what he feeds his baby.
- To a 50-year-old couple who eats fast food for lunch and has let their own health slide in order to raise their children and grandchildren.
Healthy living is not achieved with an "All or Nothing" approach. I reassure people that being fit and healthy doesn't mean becoming a gym rat, or eating like a rabbit! Being fit means including moderate, regular exercise in your life yearround -- not just when it's convenient, not just when it's warm outside. Being healthy means making BETTER choices with food -- more lean meats, fruits, veggies and water and less processed food and soda.
Accountability works. Get involved in a program that supports healthy lifestyle changes. When people around you are talking healthy, it rubs off! It's that simple. Our Corporate Fit Challenge program is amongst the best in the nation. We have helped more than 1,000 people in our community alone live better (not perfect!). We are working to bring this level of accountability and results to all BAC members and welcome your input!
I'm enjoying Spring Break in my hometown of Madison, Wisconsin with Jeff and the kids.
Even on vacation, we enjoy daily activity -- playing at the park, running through the neighborhood, TurboKick with local firefighters, TRX in my sisters basement, and Pilates at a Wellness Center!
Did I enjoy some homemade pasta and icecream pie? Sure!
But I'm not striving to be perfect, just better...
You can, too. Let's support eachother.

Training Tips
By Head Trainer, Casey Stutzman
Have you suffered from aches or pains due to an inactive lifestyle? Those will likely fade away when you begin exercising. However, some pains return no matter what you do. The good news is you can take action.
Our bodies are meant to move so when we sit at a desk all day, or a couch all night, the body becomes deconditioned and imbalances and pain develop. When we exercise most of the imbalances re-connect themselves and our body becomes more efficient and has less discomfort.
If you are already a consistent exerciser but still feel aches and pains you may not be giving your body enough recovery time. Our bodies are stressed during workouts and refuel through proper nutrition and recovery techniques such as; massage, stretching and adequate rest.
Click here to see a myofascial demonstration.
 |
For chronic aches and pains you'll likely have to take it a step farther than exercising and stretching. Tightness in the connective tissue structures, called fascia, is a big contributor to chronic pain. For example tension in the fascia of your upper back, head or forehead can cause pain and tightness in your hamstrings and lower back.
Check out the video demonstration to see how self massage techniques and the use of a foam roller can ease tense fascia and bring your body back into balance.
If you want a hands-on learning experience about self-myofascial release, join me and BAC Assistant Manager Tracie Werblow on Wednesday, March 31st at 5pm. The workshop will be located at BAC and cost $10 a person. Sign up at the front desk. Hurry--because there are only 10 spots available.

Community Outreach
BAC FIELD TRIPS
It's never too early to teach the importance and benefits of living a healthy and active life. Bay Athletic Club volunteers hands-on with students from all over Alpena in our fitness in-services. This month alone, we worked with first graders from Sanborn Elementary, preschoolers and first graders from Bingham Arts Academy, all of Immanuel Lutheran, all of Long Rapids and Wilson Elementary and all of Besser Elementary, reaching thousands of students.
We talk to the children about saying 'No' to junk food and pop and striving to be active everyday. We also play games, run relays, do line drills, TurboKick, kid yoga and more. However, the most important thing we teach them is that they are 95% more likely to be active as an adult if the adults in their life are active RIGHT NOW! It's true. Set the example!
PRESSURE TO BE PERFECT
BAC Assistant Manager Tracie Werblow shared the importance and benefits of exercise to 40 mothers and daughters during the "Pressure to be Perfect" seminar put on by the ARMC Development Council. The program focused on how to make exercise fun, accountability between mother and daughter and how to make realistic goals. The women were shown that something as simple as cranking up your favorite song and dancing around the house is exercise. Tracie also gave the women a 10 day challenge to do as a family.

-get inspired in a group setting-
by Tracie Werblow, Asst. Manager
Do you want to workout hard, but have limitations? Good news, low impact exercise burns calories and fat just like high impact. Plus, BAC offers a variety of low impact classes. Try Power and Grace, Sculpt, PiYo, Step, Pilates, Aqua Fit, Cycle and Yoga. The instructor will give you modification ideas, but here are some tips you can do to intensify the class even more:
For a class like Step, you will use a bench that can be set at different levels. Step is a choreographed exercise class, but you can choose to exercise at a lower level step or with no step at all.

"GET INSPIRED!"
Our "60 Second Inspiration" spots are taking a spring break as well. No worries, they will be back in May! But for now you can catch all of our spots on our website www.BayAthleticClub.com or click on the logo. Make sure you see our latest spots featuring Brenda Diem, a woman who was a yo-yo dieter and inconsistent exerciser until she started a competition with her sister, now she's hooked to working out. We've also featured the employees of Alpena County who completed a Corporate Fit Challenge, and our final spot this season highlighted the Phillips family.

Healthy Living
-suggestions for an inspired life-
By Kelly Bowlin, Asst. Manager
It's March in northern Michigan and asparagus season is almost here. Why so excited you ask? Asparagus is available year round, but is the best tasting in the spring. It's healthy too! Asparagus has plenty of vitamins (A, C, B-6, B-9 and B-12) and the anticarcinogenic, antioxidant glutathione.
Did you know that much of Michigan's asparagus is grown near the Lake Michigan shoreline, where moderate temperatures and loamy soils make excellent growing conditions? Michigan asparagus, unlike asparagus from other states, is hand-snapped above the ground. This method results in a more tender and flavorful product. Enjoy it at its peak with this healthy, low fat pounded chicken recipe.
Garlic Chicken and Asparagus Rollups
Ingredients:
--3-4 boneless, skinless chicken breats
--1 bunch asparagus
--3-4 oz of low fat feta cheese
--2 fresh garlic cloves
--3 TBSP olive oil
--3/4 cup chicken or vegetable stock
--salt and pepper to taste
Directions:
Wrap chicken breast in two sheets of plastic wrap and, with the heel of your hand, pound out the chicken until it is 1/2 inch thick. For best results, start in the thickest part of the chicken and work in a circular motion. Uncover and season with salt and pepper. Meanwhile, steam asparagus stalks in the chicken broth in a shallow saute pan until bright green, but still slightly crisp. Reserve the left over chicken stock for the sauce. Bring the olive oil up to heat in a large dutch oven vessel. Wrap three asparagus with pounded chicken with 1 ounce of feta cheese and secure the chicken in place with two toothpicks. Sear all sides of the chicken until slightly browned, add the garlic and cook until it becomes fragrant, about one minute. Deglaze the pot by adding the liquid from the bottom of the pot. Cover and place the pot in a pre-heated 350 degree oven and bake until chicken juices run clear, about 10 to 15 minutes. |
