Retreat, Reward and Really Amazing Community....
RETREAT:
I snuck away on a (very!) last-minute weekend retreat to rejuvenate my mind, body and spirit! A book on the beach, a Miami-style workout, a great night sleep, some dancing, sushi, laughter and a Starbucks latte cured all. I came home eager to hug my family and jump back into life with two feet...and we've been making quite a splash here! Read below about our 17 Corporate Fit Challenges, two record-breaking boot camps and our loyal BAC members who are on the journey with me.
REWARD:
Honestly, it doesn't get better than this! My BAC leaders, my best friend, my husband and I attended the Annual Chamber of Commerce dinner with hundreds of members of the business community. It was an inspiring gathering of people who work hard and work smart to brings jobs and better lives to our community. My heart was pounding fiercely as I was called to the podium to accept the 2010 Health Leadership Award from the ARMC Business Development Council. What an honor. Five years ago, BAC wasn't even a thought. Four years ago, we opened the doors. Today, we reach thousands of people with the message that active people are happier and healthier. What a true testament of passion and community will blended together! Thank you!
REALLY AMAZING COMMUNITY:
Yes, the club is hopping with our fantastic, loyal BAC members as well as many new faces. We believe that GREAT results (and even equipment) is worth sharing with others! Thanks for being flexible and friendly to all who seek better health! My husband Jeff and I have been brainstorming over late-night dinners about how to re-arrange and re-invent space, equipment and classes to add more, offer more and serve more! We have your best interests at heart and welcome your input.
Be AMAZING in what you do EVERY DAY!

p.s. My daughter Jade designed her own t-shirts that say "Exercise Please" with a picture of two smiling faces. So simple. So true. Proceeds are split between her college fund and her school's PhyEd fund to purchase new equipment! WOW! Here is a picture of my son, Colt, at home modeling the shirt (try not to notice the toys scattered across floor behind him!) Email my newest team member, amazing Katie if you want one for ten dollars. |

Training Tips
By Head Trainer, Casey Stutzman
Variety is the spice of life and the key to long term success. Now that the calendar has turned over another year you might be looking to get back into fitness or to become reinvigorated with your workout. I suggest cross-training.
The idea behind cross-training is that by utilizing a variety of training techniques we become more balanced in our physical conditioning and in better shape. It is important to strength train for muscles and do cardiovascular activities for a strong heart and lungs. Someone who only lifts free weights would greatly benefit from adding some group exercise classes or cardio to their program. On the flip side if a person only spends time on the elliptical or in classes, adding some basic strength training would make an amazing difference in their results!
If you've never taken a group exercise class you could also be missing the boat! There are a variety of classes to meet your goals and challenge your body in new ways. The best part is all of these things are available to you right now! We encourage members to take advantage of all that is offered at BAC because we have seen it work for so many people!

Community Outreach
Bay Athletic Club owner Trina Gray had the privilege of being a keynote speaker at two local D.A.R.E. graduations in January. Over forty 5th graders at Bingham Academy and Sunset Elementary successfully completed the program ran by Officer Tim Marquardt which teaches the dangers of drugs and violence. Trina told the children about the power of saying no to drugs and the power of saying yes to healthy living. She also encouraged them to use their talents to build a healthy and happy community. Trina was recently asked to join the DARE Advisory Board.
The Latin moves and music of Zumba spiced up a Monday night at the Alpena Boys and Girls Club in January. Over a dozen teenage girls took advantage of a Zumba lesson and class led by BAC Zumba Instructor Sarah Oskey. The girls enjoyed cumbia, merengue and salsa rhythms, all while getting their heart rates up and doing something good for their bodies.

Healthy Living
-suggestions for an inspired life-
By Kelly Bowlin, Asst. Manager
A healthy, rich noodle dish is so welcome in the winter. I love the combination of peanut sauce, red pepper flake and salty soy sauce combined with fresh vegetables that are available all winter long. This recipe makes a lot, so invite your friends over for a simple, yet delicious noodle night!
Spicy Peanut Sauce Noodles
Ingredients:
--soba noodles, 1/2 box
--1 cup frozen edamame
--3 large carrots, cut into matchstick size
--1 large onion, sliced 1/4 inch wide pieces
--1 clove of crushed garlic
--3 tbsp of oil
--1 cup smooth peanut butter
--1/4 cup soy sauce
--1/4 cup water
--1 tbsp red chili flake
--1 tbsp sesame oil
Directions:
Bring a large pot of salted water to a rolling boil. Throw soba noodles, edamame and carrots into the pot. Cover and cook for six minutes and drain. Meantime, while the noodles are cooking, place oil, garlic and onion slices into a wok or other large saute pan. Cook until the onions are tender, but not limp like your noodles. Turn the heat to high on the wok and add the noodle and veggie mixture into the onions and flash cook for one minute. Lower the heat to medium and add the peanut sauce ingredients: peanut butter, soy sauce and red chili flake. Once the peanut butter is melted and mixed thoroughly with the noodles, add the water to thin out your sauce. Transfer to your serving dish and dress with the sesame oil.
