Put a smile on your Face(book) & Check out my Top 8
It's
true. I love Facebook on Sunday nights when I can catch up
on people's fun posts and pictures from the weekend. Even
more, I love having positive people in my life who share stories of joy
(rather than bits of rage) on their profile pages. I
read about my friends Beth, Andrea and Nora's display of
courage at the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Chicago. That
is friendship. I
saw heart-warming pictures from our Girls on the Run event in Alpena
that attracted 84 runners to support a self-confidence building run
program for area girls.

I was inspired by my friend Jenelle's participation in Turbo
for a Cause in Toledo to raise money to fight addictions. What a
great reason to sweat. Hundreds of people turned out and thousands were
raised.
Last week, I had the privilege of speaking to
National Honors Society students from the
Thunder Bay Junior High. I shared with them my eight tips for
building a successful career. These posts tonight remind me of several
of them. I want to share them with you, too. Adults and students alike
can benefit from turning this checklist into reality. Watch your life
soar...!
1. Find a mentor
2. Surround yourself with positive people
3. Have a champion mindset
4. Constantly read and learn
5. Get up when you fall down
6. Give back to your community
7. Don't strive to be perfect, just better than yesterday
8. Dream big, and take ACTION Trina Gray

Training Tips
By Head Trainer Casey Stutzman
Which sounds better to you:
1. Taking off 5 pounds for summer by crash dieting and excessive cardio, then gaining it back.
2. Achieving a lean, fit look that will stay with you forever.
This
isn't a trick question, the answer is simple, yet so many people chose
number one. Our culture is obsessed with the number on the
scale and generally gives no thought to body composition (the
amount of lean body mass compared to fat mass). We need to focus on the
fact that increasing the amount of lean muscle on your
body naturally ups metabolism. Meaning, you burn more
calories all day long.
It's the best kept weight loss secret!
Here are some ways to change your body composition:
-
EAT! Food is fuel and your body needs
it. You can't expect to build a stronger, healthier
body unless you have energy. Of course, be sure to
choose healthy, clean foods that aren't filled with empty calories.
- Work in resistance training. For
muscles to get defined and stronger they need to be worked.
Ladies, I promise you will not get "big", you will get toned.
- Don't give up your cardio. You've got to burn existing fat somewhere, and yes, cardio is great for that. Just don't stop there!
Remember:
Cardio is for burning existing fat, but resistane training is for keeping fat off. Find a balance between the two.

Shake up your workout and burn more calories during a Fat Blasting class at BAC. Fat
Blasting classes use interval training to supercharge
your metabolism, scorch calories and melt away fat. By switching
intervals from high intensity to low intensity your body is able to
burn excess calories and fat longer and even when your body is at
rest. Interval training also keeps your workout fresh and
exciting.
BAC offers a variety of these classes, inspired by the success of our Fat Blasting Boot Camps!
Mon-- Fat Blasting Intervals at 6:00 am
Mon-- Fat Blasting Circuits at 4:15pm
Wed--Fat Blastng Intervals at 9:30am

Community Outreach
Garden Moves
Bay Athletic Club assistant manager Tracie Werblow shared
safety tips with the Alpena Garden Club recently. She
taught the members to reduce back pain by using their legs
while lifting pots and soil and to avoid too much rotation
and reaching in flower beds. Try staying directly in
front of the area you are working on. Tracie also touched on
the benefits of ergonomic gardening tools to protect your hands and
wrists during long hours of gardening.

Healthy Living
-suggestions for an inspired life-
By Assistant Manager Kelly Bowlin
Are you shy to admit that you now
grill your burgers with Turkey? Is it un-American, un-manly
or just un-cool to use turkey?
Of course
not! Turkey is a great alternative to Beef. Plus it's
a lower calorie and lower fat option if you choose white meat
ground turkey.
My recipe for Turkey Burgers is a little
different...it includes a hint of Asian inspired flavors and a twist
from my fish tacos recipe. I hope you enjoy the makeover of the
plain Jane burger!
Turkey Burger Makeover
Turkey Buger Ingredients:
-1lb lean ground turkey meat (natural best)
-1 TBSP red pepper flake
-1 TBSP dark sesame oil
-1 TBSP soy sauce
-1 TBSP extra virign olive oil
-1 TSP cayenne pepper
-1 TSP ground ginger
-2 garlic cloves mashed into a paste (see below for directions)
Eatable Cabbage Garnish Ingredients:
-2 cups of green and red cabbage sliced very thin
-1/4 cup of sweet onion or shallots sliced very thin
Re-vamp Your Cheeseburger Ingredients:
-1/3 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice, divided
-3 inch roll of goat milk cheese (chevre)
-1 TSP wasabi (try the wasabi mustard for a milder flavor)
-1/2 TSP cumin powder
-salt and pepper to taste
Directions:
In a medium mixing bowl, combine all the ingredients
for the Turkey Burgers, mashing them together with your hands, until
thoroughly combined. Take the peeled garlic cloves on a cutting
board, place the side of a large knife blade on top of the garlic and
slam the heel of your hand on to the blade. Repeat until garlic
is flattened. Then finely mince the garlic into a paste.
Add to burgers, mix thoroughly. Form into patties with a slight
indentation in the middle of the burger as this will help to keep the
burger from puffing up in the middle. Place in fridge until ready
to cook.
In a medium bowl, combine the cabbage, onion and 1/4 cup of lemon juice. Dust lightly with salt and pepper, place in fridge to allow the flavors to meld.
In a small bowl, combine the rest of the lemon juice, chevre, wasabi and cumin with a spoon until mixed completely.
Grill or pan fry your turkey burgers (coat lightly
with olive oil for easier cooking) until cooked through. Layer
burger with chevre topping and cabbage for a satisfying and unique
burger experience. Try serving with steamed and salted snow peas
for a french fry replacement. Also try wheat sandwich thins to
cut back on carbs. Enjoy! |

The Proof is in the Pudding:
A special note from Trina:
Guess what
I found on-line tonight? Researches at Duke Univsersity (sorry, State
fans) released a study that overweight employees take 13
times the number of sick days per year, spend more
money on medical care, and file twice as many workers
comp claims as fit employees.
Here is what they concluded:
Proactive employers are tackling obesity in the workplace head-on with corporate fitness programs. Many
have discovered that diet and fitness programs encouraging friendly,
fun competition among employees are the most successful.
Sound
familiar? Heck, yeah! Sounds a lot like our Corporate Fit
Challenge! We are doing what others are just contemplating!
Take a
moment to read below about the success of Alpena-area businesses
that have completed our Challenge just in the past month! We are on fire here. When you watch the videos, you'll want to stand up and shake it (or at least go for a walk).
