Stop Asking PERMISSION

I recently attended SHINE, a business convention in Las Vegas, led by Ali Brown. She's an all-star presenter, motivator and champion of creating a career and life that you love. I picked up many tips (I also enjoyed time with my husband and 2 great friends who love being parents and entrepreneurs as well!)
One tip to share is this: Stop asking permission for what you want in life! If you have a dream, go after it. Others can only slow you down if you let them!  You don't need to jusitfy your ambitions, just help others and you will always live a life of purpose.
If you want to get fit, do it! Even if your inner circle is on the couch. If you want to eat better, do it! Even if your family is stuck on fast and fatty food. Make the change. You don't need permission.

Yes, we need support from our spouses, family and friends but I now stop short at saying that we need their permission. You've got to believe in your power to be fit, to be happy, to be successful. Of course we want others to join us on the journey. But if you run your own race, those who like your speed and your destination will be along side of you.

This newsletter is truly action-packed, so I want you to get to the good stuff below. Could you feel the earth shaking on Saturday night in Alpena, Michigan! It was the grand finale of our 2010 Thinner Winner Contest and we celebrated. See the video highlights below. Get ready to put your hands in the air.

Training Tips
By Head Trainer, Casey Stutzman

The human body is one of the most amazing and complex machines on the planet, the feats it is capable of are nothing short of incredible. When pushed and challenged it is able to adapt more so than any other creature or machine on earth.

When you hear stories where a mother is able to muster up the strength to lift a car off a child it's clear that strength is just as much mental as it is physical.  Remember that when you are looking to improve your health and wellness.

We workout and exercise to test our physicalBRAIN POWER! limits and grown stronger.  The reality is that the tone of your mind can be your biggest asset or biggest downfall.  Mental health and strength is the foundation on which a strong and healthy body is built.  Fitness is all about feeling better about yourself and doing things you love without limitations. This all starts with your mind.

Goal setting, positive affirmations, inspirational stories and surrounding yourself with positive people all play a far greater role in your fitness success then spending enough time on the treadmill.

"Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right!"--Henry Ford

 "GET INSPIRED!"

We have featured more than 75 people and families with our "60 Second Inspiration" stories since they began in 2009.  Most recently we've told you the story of Fay and
Andrea Linton
Linton and daughters
Polly Zielaskowski, who keep each other accountable with their "workout dates"; Andrea Linton, who says fitness gave her the power to fight back when she was diagnosed with breast cancer; and Sean Rivard, who thought he'd never be active again after a snowboarding accident.

There is no shortage of inspiration in our community.  Look around and take it in.  Be an inspiration to someone else by paying it forward and inviting them to do something healthy with you.

"60 Second Inspirations" will return in January, but until then visit our youtube page to a daily dose of inspiration.
Community Outreach
With school back in session, the Bay Athletic Club staff is busy inspiring students all over the area.  We love this time of year because we get to show the youth of our communityElla White what it means to be healthy.

One of our latest trips was to Ella White to meet a group of Headstart preschoolers.  We taught them how healthy food makes our bodies grow bigger and stronger and gives us energy.  Then they were treated to some relay races and turbo to get a taste of just how fun exercise can be.

Healthy Living

 -suggestions for an inspired life-

By Kelly Bowlin, Asst. Manager

Click here to email me!This month I held another cooking demonstration for members that featured one of my favorite Fall recipes.  It was a hit!  This healthy recipe is always a pleaser and easier to make than you may think.  Have fun wowing your dinner table guests with this recipe.

Acorn Squash Bottom Crustless Quiche

Ingredients:
-1 small to medium acorn squash
-1lbs turkey sausage
eggs-9 farm fresh eggs, lightly beaten
-1 large bunch kale with large stems removed, chopped
-1 to 2 leeks, white and light green part only
-2 whole garlic cloves, minced
-8 leaves of fresh sage, chiffonade
-3/4 cup freshly shaved parmesan cheese
-1/2 cup olive oil, divided
-salt and pepper

Directions:

Do Ahead--Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Cut the acorn squash horizontally and place on a cookie sheet. Season with salt, pepper and 1/4 cup of olive oil to coat the flesh of the squash and cover with tin foil.  Bake, covered for 60 minutes and then take foil off for an additional 10 minutes or until a rich, golden color comes to the edges of the squash. Be sure the flesh is done and not hard in any place. Let it cool on the pan for 1/2 hour and then place in the fridge in an airtight container. This may be done a couple days ahead of time or you could use left over squash from a previous dinner. While the acorn squash is cooking, take this time to trim and chop the kale. Hold onto the bottom of the kale's thick stem and pull the leaves off by sliding your hand along the length of the stem removing the leaves from the thick fibrous stems. Place leaves in a breathable veggie bag. This may be done one day ahead.

Game Time--In a large skillet, turn heat to medium and add olive oil and turkey sausage and a sprinkle of salt and pepper to the pan, until browned, chopping into small pieces as it cooks. In the last minute of cooking, toss in the sage chiffonade and stir to combine. Remove sausage from the pan, reserving any oils in the pan. While the turkey is cooking, slice the leek(s) in half, removing the dark green leaves (compost!) then vertically in half. Rinse the leeks under cold water to remove the soil that is trapped between the layers and slice into half moons about 1/4 inch thick. Add leeks to pan and turn heat to medium low, stir frequently to avoid browning. After 3-4 minutes, add the garlic, until fragrant about 1 minute. Meanwhile, take the trimmed kale and rinse in a colander very well. Get rid of as much water from the veggie as possible (a salad spinner is ideal) and then roughly chop. Add the turkey back into the leek and garlic mixture and top with the raw kale. Cover and steam the kale for 3 to 4 minutes or until the kale is limp but still a vibrant green. Stir vigorously, completely cooking the kale. Take off heat and cool slightly.

Acron QuicheCarefully remove the skins from the cooled acorn squash, trying not to mash the squash, but rather chunks of squash. Place in the bottom of a 9 inch glass or stone pie plate.  Layer the turkey and kale over the squash, then toss the shredded parmesan cheese on top. Finally, top with beaten eggs and use your fingers to get the egg all the way into a mixture. Bake covered for 45 minutes and uncovered for the last 15 minutes. Cool about 5 minutes before serving. Pairs well with split pea soup and homemade cranberry sauce. Serve with a dollop of, you guessed it, greek yogurt for a protein boost!
