What kind of IMPACT are YOU making?
I recently returned from an amazing "blue-sky" weekend in Laguna Hills, CA, where I created and shared with a powerful, grateful group of fitness professionals. (Thanks, Vito, for organizing!) We've been connected for three years, as members of Todd Durkin's Mastermind group. Who's Todd? If you don't know yet, you will soon. He's inspiring! He's fierce! He's the owner of Fitness Quest 10 in San Diego, Top 10 Gym, as rated by Men's Health. He's a motivational coach, Amercia's Top Personal Trainer, Trainer to Drew Brees (Super Bowl 2010 MVP). He's also an inspiring leader in his community, to his team, a loving father of three and a husband! And now? He can add "best-selling author" to his list.
I spent Friday night with his new book: The IMPACT Body Plan. I read and re-read the first few chapters before I even moved on. Why? Because it has such a powerful message: World-class physical conditioning of the mind and body is needed to enjoy a world-class life, and can be achieved by anyone! I hope you join me in reading it! Find it on Amazon at this link:
Todd Durkin's book: The IMPACT Body Plan
Today, I had the pleasure of being the guest on a morning televised talk-show on WBKB-TV in Alpena. I LOVED it. Why? Not because I liked being on a TV set (I'm used to workout clothes and ponytails!) I LOVED it because I shared the message that people who move more and eat better are HAPPIER! It's true. I've experienced it in this community in a way that's truly hard to put into words (but I might just do that someday! wink.) If you missed it, I'm working on getting a digital copy uploaded to www.TrinaGray.com Stay tuned!
What's your takeaway? Get the book, decide to make an IMPACT and be sure to tell me about it! Also, tackle something NEW. We grow as we stretch our own boundaries. I'm trying something NEW this Friday. I'll tell you all about it NEXT month, after I've accomlished it. Fingers crossed...

Training Tips
By Head Trainer, Casey Stutzman
Life is all about living between the extremes. The pendulum swings both ways, and that's why it is important to find a healthy balance, whether it be with work and family time or your workouts and goals.
It happens too often that someone gets extreme with their health and fitness and then falls off the wagon down the road. Another example is the former star athlete who used to devote hours to fitness and now barely moves off the couch. How can people with such great potential and huge past achievements go so wrong?
Sometimes our greatest strength can also be our greatest weakness. It's easy for a driven person to burn out quickly. The pendulum has been to one side for so long, it will eventually swing back. They may be lost without a new goal or reason to work so hard. That's why it is crucial to make realistic goals.
No one wants to keep losing the same 10 pounds over and over again. So don't! Look at the big picture. Maybe your goal for this month is to create a new workout and exercise 3 times per week, and the next month it's to change it again. Weight loss will follow and will be easier to maintain if it's not the only focus. Also, think about training for something special like a 5K, 1/2 marathon, bike race, distance walk, etc. The goal doesn't always have to about the scale. After all, it's just a number!

"GET INSPIRED!"
There is never a shortage of inspirations at Bay Athletic Club. We are grateful to have the ability to help change lives, but sometimes the biggest blessing is being able to witness the transformation. Then we share the journeys with the community through our "60 Second Inspirations." In recent weeks we have featured Sue Sexton, a mother of four who started her
 | | Chris Spencer before | journey after enrolling in last year's Thinner Winner competition; Chris Spencer, a young man who didn't let autism or anything else stop him from losing 50 pounds in less than four months and Rick Houchin, a US Coast Guard who went from weighing 230 pounds with 24% body fat to being the fittest of his life at 180 pounds with 10% body fat.

Childhood obesity is increasing at a terrifying rate. Many children aren't being exposed to the benefits of exercise and are suffering from the side effects. The secret to getting kids to exercise is to make it fun! That's what Beachbody trainers Shaun T and Tony Horton do in their workouts designed just for kids. Cool dance moves and exciting obstacle courses keep kids smiling while doing something great for their young bodies.
BAC kicked off a program called "Kid's Fit Club" and it is based on Shaun T's Fit Kids Club and Tony Horton's Tony and the Kids. Healthy Living
-suggestions for an inspired life-
By Kelly Bowlin, Asst. Manager
This month's recipe incorporates all of the delicious local ingredients available at their peak season here in Michigan. Make an adventure out of grocery shopping for this dish by visiting an apple orchard, a farmer's market for the veggies and fresh herbs and take a hike to look for the mushrooms. Enjoy! Quinoa Stuffed Roasted AppleIngredients:-3 cups cooked quinoa (easy to prepare; 1 1/2 cups dried quinoa and 3 cups of water) -3 TBSP Olive Oil -1 cup chopped oyster mushrooms -1/2 cup chopped shallots -1 TBSP chopped garlic -1/2 cup diced butternut squash -1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts, toasted -1 TBSP chopped fresh sage -2 TBSP chopped fresh parsley -1/2 tsp salt -1/2 tsp fresh ground black pepper -1 cup apple cider vinegar, simmered with a tsp of sugar until reduced to 1/4 cup -6 Michigan gala apples, each hollowed out and roasted at 350 degrees for 12 minutes
Directions: In a medium skillet heat the olive oil and sweat the onions, then add garlic, mushrooms, butternut squash and saute until the vegetables are tender but not blackened. Meanwhile have the apples ready to stuff in a baking dish. To the vegetables, add the quinoa, chopped herbs, nuts, salt and pepper. Saute just to heat the stuffing. Stuff the apples until nice and overflowing with the mixture and bake in the oven at 350 degrees until the apple is cooked with a bit of crisp left. Drizzle some reduced apple cider over the top of the whole baking dish for a wonderful side dish to roasted poultry or beef. Serves 6. Let me know what you think! Kelly@BayAthleticClub.com. |

-get inspired in a group setting-
by Tracie Werblow, Asst. Manager
In our group exercise classes, we always strive to keep our music fresh and inspiring. Music is a motivator and can set the tone for a class. We love getting feedback and requests from members about what songs keep them going. We also have a lot of people inquire about the songs in our playlists, so this month I decided to feature one of my favorites, Cycle Mix:
- I've Got a Feeling-Black Eyed Peas
- Gimmie Three Steps-Lynyrd Skynyrd
- Love the Way you Lie-Rhianna and Eminem
- Burn it to the Ground-Nickelback
- Dynamite-Taio Cruz
- Face Down-Red Jumpsuit Apparatus
- Hillbilly Deluxe-Brooks and Dunn
- I Like it-Enrique Iglesias ft. Pitbull
- Heart of a Champion-Nelly
- Empire State of Mind-Jay Z
- California Gurls-Katy Perry
- Dancing with Myself-Nouvelle Vague
- Cold-Crossfade
If you want to request a song for your favorite class mention it to your instructor. Also, keep an eye on our Facebook page for other playlists being posted. |
