'Tis the Season to GET FIT. GIVE BACK.
Two of my favorite things.
| | Click to watch BAC's Holiday Gift to the Community |
Honestly, what makes you feel better inside and out than fitness and giving back? At BAC, we're excited to offer two opportunities for our members and friends to enjoy a holiday-themed workout, with proceeds benefiting two local charities -- the VFW's Toys for Kids and the Pajama Drive to collect new, warm sleepware for kids in need. Join us on Sunday, December 12th and 19th at 5 p.m with a $10 donation. Click on the present to watch the "formal" invitation!
In the holiday spirit, the BAC leadership team and our guests enjoyed a night out to support the Alpena Regional Medical Center's Christmas Tree Ball. It was fun to change out of our workout clothes to help our partners in wellness at ARMC. It's a great reminder of what the season is about: Giving.
It's not too soon to mark your calendars. In celebration of our 5th anniversary, BAC is hosting a Fitness Inspired Gala on Saturday, January 15th to honor our most inspirational stories of 2010. Who is the event for? Everyone. Details below. I just bought my mom a plane ticket to join us again! She's an inspiration to me!
p.s. Just wait to see what we have in store for you in 2011...

Training Tips
By Head Trainer, Casey Stutzman
Once again, we find ourselves in the holiday season, the time of year that is filled with fun, enjoyment and family. It can also be a tough time to stay on track with your health and fitness, especially with all the holiday temptations and lack of personal time as the parties take over. My advice? Stick to these two survival tips: 1. Don't put extra pressure on yourself. Focus on maintaining during the holidays and give yourself a little wiggle room. Enjoy the season and get back on track when things calm down. 2. Maximize your time. Getting to the gym can become more challenging this time of year. When that happens try this short, can-be-done-anywhere workout featured in the video clip. Remember, something is better than nothing!

Community Outreach
BAC is honored to be helping with Fuel Up to Play 60 at Thunder Bay Junior High. TBJH kicked off the NFL sponsored program this fall and is running it through March. The goal is to get students active and help them develop healthy behaviors. The BAC staff is excited to show Alpena's youth just how much fun working out can be with two sessions a month. Be sure your TBJH student gets in on the action!

-bac group exercise rocks!-
by Tracie Werblow, Asst. Manager
Group exercise is a great way to add variety to your workout, challenge yourself and stay accountable. BAC offers amazing classes for all levels and ages, for men and women alike. Classes are a great place to learn proper form and technique.
During the holidays, it's important to take time for yourself. Buddies help you stay on track. Need a buddy? Try turning to the person next you in class. Intorduce! Tell them you'll see them at the same place, same time, next class. Now you've got a date!
Life is never going to slow down, especially this month, but working out helps you keep up with the pace!

Healthy Living
-suggestions for an inspired life-
By Kelly Bowlin, Asst. Manager
Nutritional labels can be confusing, not to mention all of the new labels proliferating packaged food items. "Gluten Free, Fair Trade, Cage Free, rBST free, Organic, Natural..." the list goes on, but the label I look for isn't actaully a pretty little logo. I shop local, seasonally fresh food as much as possible. To get through the winter, I'll get back to the basics--canning extra tomatoes, buying bulk at farmer's markets or local grocers selling Michigan grown produce and storing in my root cellar (you can use the garage if your house wasn't built in the 1800s like mine), eating more dried beans (MI is the top state producing black beans, cranberry and small red beans), cherries, apples, fresh rBST free dairy, etc. The list is long, but you need to do a little homework ahead of time. If you do, our local economy, your local farmer and your dinner table will thank you. Taste the local ingredients in my simple Cranberry Bean, Kale Pasta SoupIngredients:-5 chopped slices of turkey bacon or pancetta -1 small sweet onion chopped -3 cloves of garlic chopped -2 cups dried cranberry beans, soaked then cooked or substitute with 2 cans of white cannellini or large butter beans -1 large bunch of Kale, washed, large stems removed and chopped -4 cups of dried tortellini -32oz of whole tomatoes (preferably home canned) -1 bunch of fresh thyme -1 TBSP red pepper flakes -32 oz of chicken or turkey stock
Directions:In a large soup pot, saute the turkey bacon or pancetta until well done but not burnt. Add the chopped onion and caramelize the onion for 5 to 6 minutes. Add garlic for one minute and then add the rest of the ingredients to the pot. Allow the pot to come to a slight boil, then turn the heat down to a simmer for 15 minutes. Ladle into soup bowls and serve with toasted bread. Food For Thought: Buying local food might not be officially organic, but the farmer might have a little hand lettered sign that says "no spray" in front of her farm stand and that means the world to me. Organic labels are expensive, not just for you, but for farmers. A lot of smaller farms that grow organically can't afford the certification fees. When you eat local food, you support the local economy. During the holiday season, think about the fact that someone was able to put dinner on the table at their house because of what you put on your dinner table. Not to mention, food with a story taste better. I'll always have fond memories of the cat grass lady at the farmers market a few years ago. She was right...the dogs really did like the cat grass. Interesting.
